I don't talk trash; I talk smack. They're totally different. Trash talk is all hypothetical like 'Your Mama's so fat she could eat the internet' but smack talk is happening like right now, like you're ugly and I know it for a fact cause I got the evidence right there. -Kelly Kapoor

Today, in housing questions…

How long did the process take you from start to finish?  From meeting your realtor to unloading moving boxes into your new home.

We have our goal move in date.  But I’m starting to think we’re starting the process a little early.  What if we fall in love with a house this month?  I understand A LOT of snags can occur, but we’re not ready to sign papers yet.

Help?

  1. simplejulie answered: 4 yrs ago, we put a bid in early Dec & moved in 2/1. Buying again now, short sale. Taking much longer. Bid early Dec, expected close mid Mar.
  2. inaudiblewords said: We started in July and moved in October 1. And that was after we had a bunch of issues with the bank.
  3. lovespugs answered: 7 months. But I bought a short sale. I don’t recommend that.
  4. the-house-of-oz said: We started in December and will close March 5th. We thought it would take longer and didn’t want to move until June, but we found an amazing, updated house and are going to sacrifice a few months of double rent/mortgage.
  5. iamtallandawesome answered: We started looking in February/March and closed June 7th
  6. catsavoie answered: Started in Jan, found my place in mid-March, closed Apr 20. Financing was tough, but that had a lot to do with my building.
  7. lifeandpictures said: About 6 months :/ but we had to get a building loan also
  8. eerriinnbbaaeerr answered: Depends on A LOT of variables. Are you pre approved? For me, the money part took the longest. I’d have all that in place before you start
  9. megandhertwolongdogs answered: Decided to buy/started looking in Nov. Found “the one” in Jan. Waited for it to be finished (being built) and moved in end of Feb. Fast!
  10. missevadoesit answered: It’s ok to look to get a feel for what you want, but odds are you are going to fall in love & want to sign. my process was 2 months.
  11. my-little-kumquat answered: We had a 3 month timeline because of our rental lease expiring. 3 months was enough time to find a house, close on it, do some work & move!
  12. lizmooremusic said: Met with realtor first time on June, closed on Nov. 21!
  13. 5tickyheels answered: We started looking and talking to a Realtor in September 2010 and we were moved in to our home by mid-December.
  14. callmejessca answered: Mine was about 2 months from first showing to counter offers to closing date, but in my case we were lucky to have no snags!
  15. definitelyjennifer answered: we’ve bought a few houses in the past 3 years and it’s different every time. i always err on the side of don’t look until your ready to sign
  16. reallynic said: Mine was rather quick - probably about 4 months including a few weeks between offer and closing and 3 weeks of renovations. But the seller wanted to unload fast and I didn’t want to sign another lease. And it was exactly what I wanted.
  17. valerina answered: But my situation may not be the average.
  18. valerina said: For me, the process was pretty quick. You have to get an inspection but if the sellers want to get out of their house quick, they’ll probably offer to pay for it and get it done pretty fast. I’d say you have about a month, depending on the sitch.
  19. notbuying answered: 8 months - but i had a bad seller who fought us a lot so it took 5 months from offer to closing.
