I don't talk trash; I talk smack. They're totally different. Trash talk is all hypothetical like 'Your Mama's so fat she could eat the internet' but smack talk is happening like right now, like you're ugly and I know it for a fact cause I got the evidence right there. -Kelly Kapoor

Wedding gift etiquette?

I’m surprised to learn HOW DIFFERENT people are in their views on what’s appropriate and what’s not in terms of wedding gifts.

So I ask you Tumblr, how much do you spend on a wedding gift if …

  1. You’re attending solo
  2. You’re attending with a date
  3. You’ve traveled for the wedding (spent money on airfare & hotel)
  4. You’re in the wedding and have dropped money on pre-wedding events
  5. You’re not in the wedding and have given gifts at pre-wedding events
  1. peppersprout answered: Always about $100. But, stalk the registry beforehand and wait for a discount code and your $100 goes further.
  2. lavidasf said: oops - 1) $100 2) $150 3) Same as 1 or 2 4) $100 - $125 5) $100
  3. lavidasf answered: Late to the game - but
  4. hershapeinthedoorway answered: WHOA people spend a lot more than me! I think this is a subjective question, and it all depends on the guest’s stage in life honestly.
  5. notsoplainandtall answered: Depends on a lot. Usually $300-$400 as a couple, travel: $200, in wedding: $100-$200, attended pre-wedding: $300-$400. This is NY though :(
  6. see-jess-live answered: I give based on how much I love the couple. For close friends, I spend however much I want.
  7. muchtoyourchagrin answered: Not less than $200 (no matter what)… or a reciprocation of what the couple gave us at our wedding (bwhahaha!)
  8. phillyfilly said: i never factor in travel or pre-wedding activities. if you love them enough to buy plane tickets and pay for hotels, and if they love you enough to include you in showers, i don’t know why you’d get a cheaper gift than someone you’re not as close to?
  9. noevidenceofintelligence said: Depends…how much do I like this person and how many ridiculous things did they register for? Usually somewhere from $20-50 depending.
  10. twodoxiesandtoomanyshoes answered: The last wedding I went to, I was 13. My cousin is getting married (2nd time) I told her I’d buy her shoes. She’s vegan, so it’ll be cheap.
  11. definitelyjennifer answered: i spent less when i was younger but these days it’s - $100 solo, $200 as a coupld no matter of the travel. if we’re super tight it’s more
  12. eerriinnbbaaeerr answered: I usually spend $50-100 depending on the friend level. Wedding registries are for NICER stuff you already have. I spend more for babies…
  13. stickyheels answered: Depends on if I’ve given gifts at previous showers/events. Basically $40-65 across the board. Less if I’m in the wedding.
  14. haygirlhay answered: 1. $50-75 2. $100-150 3.same as 2 & 3 4. it’s a close friend so same again 5. same, yet again
  15. hellokatie answered: Depends on how close I am to them - $50 if not super close, +$100 if they are a good friend, both are regardless of travel and pre-wed gifts.
  16. my-little-kumquat answered: for me it more depends on how close i am to the person or couple and how my finances are at the time.
  17. cmconnors answered: I do $100 solo, $200 date regardless of travel. If I am in the wedding I give more.
  18. valerina said: I don’t usually have to pay for airfaire for weddings because most people I know get married in Georgia. I usually spend anywhere from $25-$50 depending on how well I know the person.
  19. luciwithani answered: 1: 100 2: 200 3: 150-200 depending on closeness to couple 4: 200 5: 100-200 depending on closeness to couple.
  20. champagne-campaign answered: 1) 75, 2) 150, 3) not really a factor, 4) 100-150 depending on how much i like them). 5) about the same since i get smaller shower gifts…
  21. maz2am answered: $100-150 for 1, 3, 4, 5….$200 for 2
  22. tehvalerie answered: Honestly I think wedding etiquette guidelines are bullshit and it all depends how close I am to the couple.
  23. divinesecrets answered: Apparently guidelines for this are VERY different in the north and the south. I’m interested to see answers - I’m all over the board on this.
  24. imnotthatkindofgirl answered: I tend to go cheaper on the pre-wedding and help them break even at the reception. All of this is affected by how broke I am.
  25. liligolightly answered: Depends on earlier events and how close a friend. The range goes anywhere from $75 (acquaintance, solo) to $250 (good friend, with Andrew).
  26. andiwa answered: I need help for the wedding I’m a bridesmaid in that is going to take place in St. Croix. SO MUCH CONFUSED.
  27. pullmyfoamfinger answered: 1. unless its a good friend 50; 2. unless a good friend 75; 3. 50; 4. 50; 5. 30.
  28. notbuying answered: i dont base it on any of these - i base it on how close i am to the couple.
  29. ohonelovelyday answered: I usually spend $50 on the wedding gift regardless. I don’t know if that’s right though…
  30. maryanne said: I typically try to spend however much the couple spends per head. Typically that can be anywhere from $60-$150 depending on the venue. If I travel, I will spend a little less on the gift, but have it be an item from the registry.
  31. boggle- said: I will come back and look at these answers because I am always struggling with this.
