I don't talk trash; I talk smack. They're totally different. Trash talk is all hypothetical like 'Your Mama's so fat she could eat the internet' but smack talk is happening like right now, like you're ugly and I know it for a fact cause I got the evidence right there. -Kelly Kapoor

No I’m not getting married…

But my Mom randomly brought up the other day that she still had her old wedding dress that I could use for my wedding someday.

I immediately told her YEA RIGHT like that would fit, because my Momma has always told us that before popping out us kids she was 5’9 and 115lbs.

I got my Mom’s height.  I did not get her body type.

She told me that she was a little heavier at her wedding (and by heavy I mean 130 lbs.  No really Mom, I wish you could see my eye rolls) and the dress was a size 12.

Now.  A size 12 is not big by any means.  But 5’9 and 130 lbs does not equal a size 12.

Do wedding dresses come in DRASTICALLY different sizes than normal?  Am I going to throw myself off a bridge one day (throwing myself off a bridge is my new wedding planning pinterest board) when I’m trying on a size 45??

  1. definitelyjennifer answered: OHMYGODYES wedding dresses come in the dumbest sizes ever. for example, the dress i wore on my wedding day was my normal size +6. it’s stupid
  2. lovelayneb answered: I had to order a size 12 gown even though my regular “mall” size at the time was an 8. Not a great idea to make the bride feel like a fatty.
  3. theprairiescall answered: Sizes may have changed since your mom married. a size 12 then might be more like a size 6 or 8 now.
  4. profashional said: yep. i wear a 2/4 in real clothes and my wedding dress was a 10 or 12 (def. double digits) i once ordered a BM dress in a size 14 - i’m 5’6, 125.
  5. sciencingsara answered: I wear a size 12 in regular clothes and a size 16 in bridesmaid dress sizes. Yeah.
  6. lovespugs answered: Yes! Same with BM dresses. Just go with whatever fits and nevermind the size.
  7. eerriinnbbaaeerr answered: I think they are usually a size up from Gap/J.Crew/Old Navy sizes. All mine have been as a bride and bridesmaid too.
  8. jodilyn said: i hate buying formal dresses, because i usually have to buy them in 12 sizes bigger than my normal size. “sorry, can’t be your bridesmaid. buying the dress hurts my self-confidence too much.” for real.
  9. thecooknook answered: yes, for a wedding dress go up two sizes from regular size. and also there was probably less “vanity sizing” when your mom got married.
  10. my-little-kumquat said: yeah wedding dress sizing is ….different!
  11. tomboyinheels said: I’m typically an 8 and had to get a 14 in a bridesmaid dress. I think I choked on my water before I found out that that was completely normal.
  12. aperfectlyordinarylife answered: i wear a size 12/14 in regular clothes. i had to order a wedding dress in a size (wait for it) 20. TWENTY.
  13. umcanyounot answered: YES the sizes are totally different.
  14. kimbaland answered: At the time of my wedding I shrunk to about a 2…my dress was a 6.
  15. blueeyedgreek answered: They generally run larger but it depends on the designer. I bought one dress (a size down) then returned it for my dream dress (a size up).
  16. livelovefeminism answered: Sizes in general back in the day were diff. Like a size 0 never existed. What is a size 0 now was a 4-6 in the 80s. And bridal sizes=weird.
  17. cmconnors answered: YES! My wedding dress was 4 number sizes larger than my “regular” dress size. I sobbed when they told me the number.
  18. reneenicolesays said: vanity sizing!
  19. lifebyliz answered: YES!!! I don’t understand why they would do that to women. You feel extremely large because the sizing is WAY off.
  20. hershapeinthedoorway answered: They do—I am a size 4-6 generally, but my wedding dress was size 12. Probably a million ppl already answered this.
  21. phillyfilly said: i think bridal designers never succumbed to the vanity sizing of ready-to-wear. usually they’re 2 sizes (four numbers) above regular clothes. who knows what they were like in the 70s though!
  22. ohonelovelyday answered: yeah dresses run so much smaller and you have to get a crazy size up!
  23. lifeandpictures said: I think years ago though a size 12 was actually like a 6 or 8 in todays standards
  24. luciwithani answered: mine ended up being my actual size. but it all depends on the style. dresses w zippers are usually size up 2. mine has a corset thing.
  25. lifeandpictures answered: if anything, the wedding dresses are sized smaller I think! I wear a size 12 and my dress was a size 8
  26. maryanne said: It depends on the brand. Some people I know who are a size 0 end up being a size 10 in wedding dresses. Some brands run truer to size which will not make you throw yourself off a cliff. I find that Enzoani and Vera Wang are pretty true to size.
  27. everydayk answered: And I think back in the day sizes were a lot different. “vanity sizing” or whatever
  28. balletintheclouds answered: Yes, Wedding dresses are MUCH bigger sizes. My best friend said she never felt more fat then when wedding dress shopping.
  29. iamtallandawesome answered: Mine was actually a size smaller than my “street size”, which made me feel like a badass. Each designer varies. Asshats.
  30. tehvalerie answered: Bridal runs about 2 sizes larger (which is just rude). Not sure about in ths 70s when most of our parents were getting married.
